Nothing is more relaxing on a cold winter day than the hypnotizing flames of a roaring fire. What isn't relaxing is cutting wood, keeping it dry, bringing it in, cussing and fighting to get the fire started, feeding the fire, and then staying awake till midnight watching it cool so you can feel comforatable about going to bed. Whew!

Many people go without the nostalgia of a fire because of these natural drawbacks. Gas logs are a great alternative to wood without any of the headaches mentioned before. With gas logs the fire can be turned on or off at will. Some units are available with remote controls or wall switches. Most sets are an excellent source of supplemental or emergency heat and require no outside electricity to operate. At The Firehouse we offer a one stop shop in that we have live burning displays, knowedgable staff, and qualified installers.

There are three basic types of gas logs available: Vent-Free, Vented-Decorative, and Vented-Heater. When you come to visit us, bring in a completed Spec Sheet (or submit online) so our staff can help you quickly.

Vent Free Gas Logs

Vent free and Unvented gas logs and are designed to burn the fuel 99% complete. This means that they burn "clean". With a vent free appliance there is no soot, high levels of CO (carbon monoxide), or other dangerous gases vented into the room. Any byproduct of combustion is so minute that typical air turnover in the home washes it out. Home ventilation is important with any type of gas product. That said, the consumer can burn this appliance in his fireplace with the damper closed and allow the heat generated to enter the room.

In order to perform safely, code limits vent-free appliances to 40,000 btus. Units are required to have an Oxygen Depletion System (ODS) with safety pilot control, meet emmisions standards, zero yellow flame impingement, and meet clearance to combustibles.

Vent-Free Gas Log Facts

• Have your fireplace inspected by a certified chimney sweep before you install any gas log set
• Best room heater of the three types of gas logs
• Vent-free gas logs are for supplemental and emergency heat only
• Available in Natural or LP gas
• Some models can use a remote, wall switch, thermostat, remote thermostat, and other accessories
• Combustion air is drawn from the room.
• Vent-free does not mean odor-free; have your fireplace professionaly cleaned. Logs don't stink, dirty fireplaces do!
• Vent-free appliances cannot be installed in a bedroom, bathroom, or any area considered to a "confined space", unless under 10,000 btus and approved for such application
• Vent-free gas logs must be installed in an approved vent-free firebox or operational woodburning fireplace
• Logs are in a fixed position; they are not movable

Vented Gas Logs

Nothing compares to the realism of a high quality vented gas log. All of our vented sets have high detail cermic/refactory cast and multicolored stained logs that look like seasoned hardwood. Glowing embers are the base for an active yellow flame. Accessories like crackling embers, ember bed elevators, and burner extensions are available for some sets. Even though it burns cleaner than wood, vented decorative gas logs must be fully vented (damper completely open) and is not sold as a heating appliance. If you are traditional "wood-burner" and are unwilling to sacrifice realism for convenience, vented decorative gas logs may satisfy your needs.

Vented-Heater Gas Logs

Just a review: Vent-Free gas logs provide the most heat and Vented-Decorative gas logs are the most realistic. "But I want heat and realism!" you say. A vented-heater log may best suit you. Vented-heater gas logs are more realistic than vent-free gas logs and output more heat than vented-decorative gas logs.
